eSIM Traffic Policies
Traffic Policies are a way to limit usage of individual eSIMs, separate of the limits set on Data Pools. This can be useful if you wish to limit eSIMs to a maximum download speed in order to conserve data, or if you want to apply a maximum data usage quota to each individual eSIM as well as the Data Pool as a whole.
Traffic Policies are Not Required
It is not required to set a traffic policy. If no policy is set, eSIMs will use data at the full speed allowed by the network until any assigned Data Pool limit is reached.
No Cost for Traffic Policies
There is no extra cost for traffic policies other than the data consumed by the eSIM. You can apply and change traffic policies to an eSIM at any time.
Types of Traffic Policies
When Creating & Managing eSIMs, you can select from multiple traffic policies with various types of data usage limitations.
Throttle
The throttle policy allows unlimited data usage, limited to a maximum upload/download speed. For example, if the Throttle - Unlimited Data at 5Mbps policy is applied, the eSIM will be able to use an unlimited amount of data with a maximum download speed of 5Mbps, but without any maximum data consumption limit.
Limit
The limit policy applies a quota of max data usage. The eSIM will be automatically disconnected from the network when limit is reached. For example, if the Limit - Maximum Data 5GB policy is applied, the eSIM will use up to 5GB of data at the full speed allowed by the network, then automatically cut off.
Daily
The daily policy applies a maximum amount of high speed data that can be used in a 24-hour period, then limits any extra usage to a maximum upload/download speed. For example, if the policy Daily - 2GB per Day, then 500Kbps is applied, the eSIM will use up to 2GB of data at the full speed allowed by the network, then automatically limit any additional usage to a maximum download/upload speed of 500Kbps until the next day.
Changing the Traffic Policy
Traffic Policies can be changed or updated at any time, in order to allow more data usage for an eSIM or limit the data usage of an eSIM.
Note that changing a traffic policy will reset the usage of any existing policy. For example, changing from a Limit - Maximum Data 1GB policy to Limit - Maximum Data 3GB will reset any data usage on the 1GB policy, and allow a full 3GB of maximum data usage. The same applies when "downgrading" traffic policies.
How to Change the Traffic Policy
To change an eSIM's Traffic Policy, follow the steps below:
- Navigate to the eSIMs page under the Mobile Data section.
- Select the related eSIM.
- Click Settings at the top of the page.
- Select the desired Traffic Policy.
- Click Update eSIM.
The new configuration will be automatically applied pushed to the network, and the eSIM will begin using the new Traffic Policy within 10 minutes at most.
